Tasks of Shiva according to Shiv Purana
According to Hinduism, one of the oldest religions of the world, there is an all-powerful god called Shiva. He is described in various Vedas - the oldest written books of humanity, and described in detail in the purana / scroll / book called "Shiva Purana".
Tasks of Shiva
According to Shiva Purana, Shiva has the following tasks. These are described as the Panchakritya / ( पाँच कृत्य ):

'सृष्टि', 'पालन', 'संहार', 'तिरोभाव' और 'अनुग्रह' - ये पाँच ही मेरे जगत्-सम्बन्धी कार्य हैं, जो नित्यसिद्ध हैं। संसारकी रचनाका जो आरम्भ है, उसीको सर्ग या 'सृष्टि' कहते हैं। मुझसे पालित होकर सृष्टिका सुस्थिररूपसे रहना ही उसकी 'स्थिति' है। उसका विनाश ही 'संहार' है। प्राणोंके उत्क्रमणको 'तिरोभाव' कहते हैं। इन सबसे छुटकारा मिल जाना ही मेरा 'अनुग्रह' है।
इस प्रकार मेरे पाँच कृत्य हैं। सृष्टि आदि जो चार कृत्य हैं, वे संसारका विस्तार करनेवाले हैं। व पाँचवाँ कृत्य अनुग्रह मोक्षका हेतु है। वह सदा मुझमें ही अचल भावसे स्थिर रहता है। मेरे भक्तजन इन पाँचों कृत्योंको पाँचों भूतों में देखते हैं। सृष्टि भूतलमें, स्थिति जलमें, संहार अग्निमें, तिरोभाव वायुमें और अनुग्रह आकाशमें स्थित है। पृथ्वीसे सबकी सृष्टि होती है। जलसे सबकी वृद्धि एवं जीवन-रक्षा होती है। आग सबको जला देती है। वायु सबको एक स्थानसे दूसरे स्थानको ले जाती है और आकाश सबको अनुगृहीत करता है।
